1968 Ford Serial (Warranty) Plate Breakdown Note: This is the same as on my 1967 Ford F100 that was built in Canada. The truck does not have the VIN Tab next to the windshield.
1: Model Designation (First 3 characters of the Warranty Number) represents the truck series. (for 1968 there is no 'M' series for Mercury)
2: Engine Designation (Fourth character of the Warranty Number) provides complete engine identification.
3: Assembly Plant Code (Fifth Character of the Warranty Number) indicates the plant where unit was built.
4: Consecutive Serial Number (Sixth through eleventh characters of the Warranty Number) Number is composed of a letter (assigned alphabetically) followed by five number characters to show consecutive numbering from 1 (shown 00001) through 99999. Use this number to determine vehicle model year.
5: W.B. (Wheelbase) Actual wheelbase length (in inches) is shown. 6: MAX. G.V.W. LBS. Maximum Gross Vehicle Weight (in pounds) is shown. 7: COLOR Single Letter or Number Code identifies the exterior body paint color on a one tone (solid) colored truck. Two Letter or Number Code identifies both exterior colors on a two tone colored truck - first letter represents the lower color, second letter represents the upper color. For Code breakdown refer to the Exterior Paint Chart. 8: MODEL Four character code represents a combination of the Series and G.V.W. The first, second and third characters are identical to the Model Designation in the Warranty Number. See Reference 1 (Model Designation) for breakdown into series. The fourth character represents the G.V.W. as shown on the plate - see Reference 6 ( Max. G.V.W. LBS.) 9: CERT. NET H.P. Horse Power Rating of engine. 10: BODY Three or Four Character Code comprises a Trim Code and Body Type Code. TRIM CODE (1st character of 3 character code or first two characters of a 4 character code) BODY TYPE CODE (last 2 code characters) identifies either Cab Type or Body Type
11: R. P. M. R. P. M. required to develop Horse Power shown in Reference 9 (CERT. NET H.P.) 12: Trans Single Character Code (Letter or Number) provides complete Transmission Identification. If a Two Character Code is shown, the first character identifies an Auxiliary Transmission, the second character identifies a Main Transmission. 13: D. S. O. 14: AXLE Two Character Code provides complete Rear Axle Identification.
